The camera run shows whether the issue is root intrusion, a cracked or separated joint, or a genuine collapse, and each one calls for a different fix. Established neighborhoods with mature trees run into root intrusion more than most, since roots find their way into a clay or cast iron line through the smallest crack and keep growing once they're in. The area's clay-heavy soil adds another layer to this: it swells during wet stretches and pulls back hard when it dries out, and that repeated movement is enough to shift a rigid pipe's joints out of alignment over years. Depending on what the camera shows, the repair might mean trenchless lining or pipe bursting, both of which fix the line from the inside without tearing up the whole yard, or it might mean an open trench for a section that's collapsed outright.

A camera fed through the cleanout or an access point shows the inside of the pipe directly, whether that's roots, a cracked joint, or a full collapse. Digging without that information first usually means guessing at the location and sometimes digging in the wrong spot entirely.
Trenchless methods fix the line from the inside, either lining the existing pipe or bursting it apart while pulling a new one through, and both avoid tearing up the whole yard.
